Hidden behind a giant magnolia, just off a busy six-lane road, lies the farm of Billy Albertson, one of the last remaining working farms in Atlanta.
Traveling past this property daily, Renea Winchester, like many others, failed to notice anything of value until...
Renea's daughter notices a primitive sign on the side of the road with the words "Baby Goats 4 Sale," written on the back of a paper plate.Even though Renea has no interest in smelling goats, she pulls into the drive one sweltering Atlanta day and meets a man who would change her life. Wearing faded cotton overalls and walking with a slight stoop, seventy-seven year old Billy Albertson extends his hand and magically fills a need Renea didn't know she had.

Join these unusual friends in the garden as they lean on each other, push through obstacles, and face life's unexpected challenges with integrity and hope.

Best-selling Authors, Patti Callahan Henry and Terry Kay have this to say about In The Garden With Billy Lessons About Life, Love & Tomatoes.

"a warm, delightful and thoughtful story chronicling her friendship with the extraordinary Billy Albertson—the kind of friendship celebrating the best that life, in all its trickery, can offer. In The Garden With Billy Lessons About Life Love Tomatoes eBook Renea Winchester

Billy is one of the last. Today there are few honorable and memorable old gentlemen left in our broken world.
These old men knew how to work, and how to work hard for 6 days-----and to glorify God on the 7th.
Renea was smart enough and lucky enough to recognize Billy to be rare. She lived in
an affluent Georgia neighbor bordering Billy's farm. Billy's simple way of living and farming were
as if he lived on another planet. In him she found a treasured friend and a new way to live life.
The world used to be filled with people like Billy----trustworthy, caring, kind, helpful, hardworking and honest.
He was a farmer who grew and sold his produce and eggs to the public. He sold on trust, the customer bagged,
weighed and put his money in a box. This elderly farmer was totally self sufficient. However, he always had time
to be kind to people and time to help others. He had frugal and creative ways of caring for his goats, chickens and
gardens. Renea, a mother of 4, a wife, and a well groomed southern women found she liked to plant, cultivate, and
tend animals. She became Billy's sidekick and he, with a 6 grade education, became her mentor. She has memorialized
Billy in print. It is a beautiful story and she tells it well. Renea's book deserved better editing than it was given. There were
many words not edited properly and numerous grammatical errors, example, me and I often misused.

In The Garden With Billy Lessons About Life Love Tomatoes eBook Renea Winchester Reviews

Reading this was inspirational and uplifting. It made me miss people and pets who are no longer here, but also made me want to be better and more appreciative. It is worth the time to read this book!
Nice book. Gets a little preachy, but the message is sound. Americans think produce comes from the grocer. Billy tells us to live off the land. Use the things you have. Accept people where we are.

If you like this, find the "Growing Your Grub" podcast with Steve Howard. That's where I heard of this. He interviews the author. She's a sweetheart!
The title truly says it all. I don't know what I learned the most about, life, love, or tomatoes? My favorite scene is the author attempting to wrangle a renegade goat back in his pen. Billy is from my father's generation and honestly there isn't many like him left. We could all hope to have a Billy. This is a must read!
It's so much more than a story about life on an urban farm. It's about jumping into someone else's culture while not giving up on your present life experiences. We get to know Billy, an interesting 80 something relic, and along the way we discover Renae the author. And it's Renae's observations, reactions and experiences she shares which are endearing. I think the title is accurate. The book is a quick and enjoyable read.
Insight into what makes a relationship work. Good hard work. This young woman has written a page turner, could not put it down, but did have time for a tomato sandwich.
I hope to read more from her since she has had a lot of life experiences that most of us will not have. Billy is the grandfather(s) I did not know even thought they were struggling farmers. His wisdom shines through and truely sings the Song of Life.
There is a Time for everything on this Earth and she and her daughter turning in to visit with the goats was the Time to begin this wonderful relationship. Thank you for sharing Billy with us.
And may God contiune to bless them and the critters also.
I purchased one for myself and another for a friend. Renea is a heartfelt writer who engages you with her southern charm while relaying the story of her life with Billy the farmer. This is a good book to gift to a friend who might be living with struggles. A great gift for any gardener. A thoughtful gift for anyone elderly in your life who reminisces back to times when canning and putting up goods is a fond memory. You will really enjoy this entertaining and easy read.
Having grown up on a farm and helping work the land, I can personally relate to this story. Just last week I described to my grandchildren how I had to fetch the eggs each day and how "setting hens" would resist my efforts.

Last year my husband and I moved to Ga from NC to be closer to our grandchildren. My new neighbor brought us a corn and tomatoes salad made with vegetables from Billy's garden. Just so happens he lives a couple miles away. I saved the bag and recipe and just happened to come across it a few weeks ago - so-I began a search of more information. Once I started the book I was hooked. What a joy to read-in such a busy and crazy world today it is a huge breath of fresh air to get to share this treasure with my friends. My next step is to visit his farm/garden. I understand that he is still doing some gardening. If my math is right he is in his mid 80s.

This book is easy to read but hard to put down. This will be on my list of feel good books that I pass on .
